Online Eid shopping gains momentum

Mumbai / Bangalore – Online shopping has started gaining momentum ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr amid its growing popularity with the boom in internet penetration across the country.

An increasing number of people, mostly city dwellers, choose e-shopping to save time as well as avoid traffic chaos and other hazards in the busy city life.

Like regular shopping malls and other shopping places, online shops also offer discount and other facilities to attract buyers ahead of the biggest religious festival of Muslims.

Fatima Sheikh, a sales executive of women's fashion brand Indiwear, said their sales started going up after Shab-e-Barat.

“We used to get 850 Eid related orders on average a day before Shab-e Barat, but now we’re getting close to 1500 Eid related orders every day," she said.

Fatima expressed hope that the upward trend in sale will continue till Ramadan. She said most of orders Indiwear gets for Eid are for sharara suits, anarkali gowns and silk salwar kameez from overseas markets such as United Kingdom, Unites States, UAE, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Mauritius and so on. Volume of orders from Pakistan has considerably dropped this year owing to trade issues between two countries as well as ongoing economic crisis in the neighbouring country.

Experts say e-commerce has been witnessing an upward trend for the last two weeks ahead of Eid-ul Fitr.

Eid related e-commerce activities marked 30 percent growth this year as the number of social media users, particularly mobile Facebook, has also sharply increased in both urban and rural areas.

Yasmin Siddiqu, a software programmer living in Bangalore, said she purchases her Eid dresses online to avoid traffic congestion on the city’s streets and save time. Apart from choice of patterns and designs, discounts and festive offers are other reasons she's attracted to e-commerce shopping.

She, however, remains concerned over the quality of products in case of e-shopping. "I prefer to stick with my favourite shopping sites like Indiwear as they are trustworthy for their quality of materials," she added.
